The Square:

Every city has its centerpiece, the core around which everything else seems to revolve - and evolve. Not necessarily a geographic center, but a spiritual or iconic landmark. In Cincinnati, Fountain Square has been the heart of the city since it was first completed in 1871.

Cincinnati's Fountain Square marks more than just the center of the Downtown business district, it is the stage for practically any significant event, family activity, political rally and holiday festival in the city.

The Fountain:

The Square is dominated by the Tyler Davidson Fountain, a 43-foot masterpiece adorned with allegorical figures and bas-reliefs depicting the influence of water in our lives. The fountain is named after Tyler Davidson, a hardware store owner and city leader who first decided the city needed a fountain. He died before his dream could be made real, but his brother-in-law, and business partner, Henry Probasco carried on his vision. It was Probasco who commissioned a Bavarian artist to create a fountain celebrating water itself. The result is the "Genius of the Waters,” a nine-foot-tall personification of the element with water streaming from her hands. She is surrounded by four adult figures each depicting practical uses for water. Those figures are surrounded by four children illustrating the pleasures of water. The water-play in the floodlights, the 43-foot statue, and the steady gathering of locals and tourists combine to create great photo opportunities!
